Viel del Pan – Feel the energy of the Marmolada glacier
Dear guests,
On the 9th July six guests from the Posta Zirm Hotel and me, Silvia Kostner, started for a magnificent hike across the Viel del Pan, a path that leads along the Southern ridge of the Padon chain. But while the hike follows a chain of green hills, the Marmolada was facing us in all its splendour during the whole day! What a contrast, what a diversity for the eye!
This is admittedly one of the most beaten tracks all across the Dolomites but it is easy to understand why. The hiking trail is narrow and exposed at times but does not show particular difficulty otherwise.
And the highlight is definitely the spectacular view of the glacier, the Queen of the Dolomites which is the Marmolada and later on the hike, the Fedaia Lake with its green-blue colour.
As we stopped at the Rifugio Viel del Pan for a drink, we could even observe with naked eye some hikers walking on the retreating ice.
For some more diversity. there are some sections from where it is possible to see the Sella Group and the Arabba Valley.
Our hike finished at the top of Portavescovo where we caught the cable-car to Arabba. Off we went by minivan back to the Posta Zirm Hotel before the usual summer thunderstorm could catch us!
Approximate lenght: 4 hours of walking
Difficulty level: fairly easy but with some exposed parts
