Via Ferrata Monte Cavallo

This equipped trail leads up to probably the most monumental and impressive mountain of the Dolomites in Alta Badia, the Sass dla Crusc which translates into Rock of the Cross.

Although the central peak named Monte Cavallo looks totally inaccessible from the bottom, the trail leading up to it is more like a secured walk than a climb.

Although we recommend you bring your harness and helmet, the actual climbing is limited and the trail it is entirely suitable for inexperienced climbers and young people.

The trip also takes you through places of major historical interest. We recommend you start the trip by taking the chair lift departing from the village of San Leonardo.

At the top, you will start walking on an ancient path while a series of pictures representing scenes from the Passion of Christ will reveal you find yourself on a Via Crucis leading up to the gothic Church of Santa Croce and the Hospice Santa Croce.

Especially in the summer, this little church is a known pilgrimage destination for the local community. Each year on the 6 June a big celebration is held and the statue of Jesus Crucified is been carried all the way from the Church in San Leonardo to this little Church at the bottom of the Rock of the Cross.

The Hospice, build around 500 years ago as a pilgrim shelter, is now a place where you can restore yourself before hitting the rock.

On a path through dwarf pines and steep scree slopes you will arrive on the main rock. Calculate a couple of hours for reaching the top (9540 feet). The return can be made going back the same way.

We recommend

Should you reach the top and still feel energetic enough in order to conquer another very close peak, continue north along the ridge from the top of Monte Cavallo to Cima Dieci.

This extra effort will pay off, you will be walking along a seriously exposed ridge enjoying amazing views across the Val Badia and the Sella massif. Come back the same way.

If you have planned a long mountain day, from the summit of Monte Cavallo, proceed along the path 7 that takes you into the Fanes National Park until you cross the junction to path 12.

This will take you through the amazing scenery of the Forcella de Medesc and further down to the village of La Villa. Come back the same way.
